It’s market time in BruceGreySimcoe! Community farmers’ markets are one of the best and most fun ways to stock up on fresh produce, baked goodies, local fish, meat and poultry. Make it a family outing and savour that special atmosphere only found at a traditional market. Most start mid-May and run till the early fall, with a handful staying open during the winter.
Browse stalls stacked high with bright and colourful locally grown fruits and vegetables, bedding plants and annuals, baked goods and locally raised meats and poultry. The food vendors share market space with vendors peddling a wide variety of goods, including antiques, jewellery and used books.
Most of the markets are one-day-a week events and usually take place in the morning, running till early afternoon. The
Keady Farmer’s Market is one of the largest in BruceGreySimcoe, with 250 vendors – one of its rustic laneways is aptly named “Antique Alley” and, if you have a good eye and not afraid to haggle, there are some treasures and some bargains to be unearthed here. Enjoy lunch on the premises, too – favourites include locally produced sausage in a bun and home cut fries. It’s also home to the Keady Livestock Market so be prepared to hear cattle lowing and to have your heartstrings tugged by the free puppies and kittens looking for a good home. Open on Tuesdays only.
The
Port Elgin Farmers’ Market has only been around for a few years and has grown to include 40 vendors. Held every Wednesday at the Coulter Parkette in downtown Port Elgin, stock up on fresh goods and then head to the beach for the Port Elgin Flea Market. Over 50 vendors hawk their wares here – children’s toys, used books, crafts, clothing and more. Take a dip in Lake Huron to cool off while you’re here or ride the miniature steam train on its loop through pretty Northshore Park.
The
Barrie Farmers’ Market is older than Canada, as it first opened on April 24, 1846. With its tagline of “Everything Under the Sun”, it’s a pretty sure bet you won’t leave here empty-handed! Over 40 vendors offer organic produce, crafts, kettle corn, soup and a variety of tasty food. Be sure to bring your own basket or bag to carry home your delicious pickings.
Local wines are now available, too, at our markets, both to sample and purchase…look for
Coffin Ridge Boutique Winery and
