RTO7’s Week in Review for September 11 2015

RTO7, in partnership with Resorts of Ontario, attended a Sales Mission in Albany, New York this past week.  On September 9th, Glenn Spriggs, ROO’s Manager, Member Field Services, and Ginny Henry, RTO7’s Communication Coordinator manned a display booth and made presentations promoting BruceGreySimcoe at the Discover Canada Showcase.   The event was organized by the Canada Tourism Centre and WITS (Working in Travel Services).


Ontario is expanding both its Specialist High Skills Major program and the Dual Credit program so it’s available to an increased number of high school students.  Hospitality and Tourism is one of the 19 sectors currently offered in the Specialist High Skills Major program.  An additional 2000 students now have the opportunity to take advantage of this career-focused program.  Read the September 8th News Release for more information.
 
The province is investing $6 million in cultural tourism through the Ontario Cultural Attractions Fund.  The goal of the fund is to help arts and cultural organizations develop, promote and present unique events and exhibitions that bring visitors to communities of all sizes in Ontario.  The fund supported 47 projects this year and over $46 million in project support since 2003.  Applications are accepted for the fund on an ongoing basis throughout the year – there is no deadline.  For more information, read the September 10th News Release from the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sport.
 
Ontario’s Lake Country and the Chippewas of Rama First Nation each hosted a workshop at the 22nd annual provincial conference of the Ontario Association of Community Futures Development Corporations.  OLC’s workshop focused on event-tourism initiatives.  The delegates’ visit to Rama featured an opportunity to see economic development first-hand.  The theme of the conference was Rural Business:  A Winning Bet and was held September 14th at Casino Rama.  The Orillia Area Community Development Corporation was this year’s conference host. The Township of Huron-Kinloss has new tourism kiosks thanks to the Grade 10 Construction class at Kincardine District Secondary School.  The kiosks offer visitors 24-hour information with points of interest, brochures and an event board.  More info about the kiosks, their locations and photos can be found in the Kincardine News article.
